One of the best ways to inspire individuals and teams to do great things is to get clear on what purpose means to them. Purpose is what gives people a reason to get up in morning and it can drive a new level of human performance. Often, big breakthroughs and achievements in this world are the result of an aligned sense of intention and commitment known as a Massive Transformative Purpose Statement (MTPS). But what is a MTPS, and why should you have one?
A MTPS is not your ordinary vision or mission statement. It’s practical, high-impact, sets your direction and holds you to account. A MTPS also ignites passion, engages people’s hearts and minds and brings individuals and groups together to create a different future. Here are three of our favourites:
- Google: Organise the world’s information
- World Top 20 Project: Educate every child on the planet
- Singularity University: Positively impact one billion people
Here at The Coach Place, our MTPS is where people who want to grow, become people who do. Having a MTPS is so significant right now. We’re living in a time when companies want to attract purpose and values-led leaders. People are thinking about what else they might want to do and where else they might want to be. They want to work for organisations and leaders that align with their own sense of purpose. And a MTPS defines what that is.
A MTPS is something that individuals can create, too. It’ll give you direction and an accountability statement that you can work towards and measure yourself against. Your personal MTPS should be short; no more than one sentence. It’s a statement that shows your values, your ambition, how you’ll measure success and what you’re committed to. It should be forward-focused. It doesn’t matter whether or not it’s obtainable. It’s what you should think about in bed each night, when you ask yourself: Did I live aligned with my purpose today?
Here are a few questions to get you thinking about what your MTPS might be:
- What do I really care about?
- What is my purpose on this earth?
- What does the world need?
- What gets me up in the morning?
- What energises and fuels me?
- What am I good at?
Your personal MTPS might be ‘to do more of what I love’, or ‘to positively impact every human I meet’. Whatever it is, make sure it’s a statement that reflects the person you want to be - someone who lives their values and is focused on the impact they want to create.
