Talent – who needs it?

Do you ever find yourself wondering why some people ‘make it’ and others don’t? Often, we attribute success to talent – a trait you’re either born with or without – that gives you the gift of greatness. But how accurate is this really? Apologies to any elite athletes out there, but surely if we all spent hours upon hours training each day from a very young age, more of us would make it to the Olympics too? Sure, natural ability may give you an advantage when starting out, but in most cases it’s a person’s determination and commitment to do the work that propels them to success.

So, when people come to us and say, ‘I’m not that good at anything’, we don’t let this self-sabotaging belief get in their way. Success and great performance are more about how hard you work, your ability to learn, your attitude, your commitment to growth, your ability to assess your own performance by seeking feedback and making adjustments, your strategy and learning, and the investment you make by speaking to other experts – engaging with a mentor, having a coach and surrounding yourself with the right people. It’s about courage and it’s also about your ability to be uncomfortable. A lot of us are stuck in comfort, tending to take the job we know we’ll be good at it, rather than the job that’ll be hard and stressful, but will teach us a lot more than the ‘comfortable’ job ever would.

If you’ve reached a junction in your career or are looking to make some changes in your life, it’s time to put aside those self-sabotaging beliefs about all the things you’re ‘not good at’. Instead, look for something you’re passionate about, or something that aligns with your purpose, or something that makes you feel good in some way. It's important to know what these things are. When we’re in the flow and it feels like we're doing something because we want or choose to, this helps us to create momentum – which is so important when it comes to change.

To help identity a potential passion project, or a role with purpose, ask yourself the following coaching questions:

  • What am I doing when I feel most fulfilled?
  • What am I doing when I feel uncomfortable but proud?
  • Who do I know that could support me in my growth?
