Confession time: here at The Coach Place, we love Dr Seuss. To be more specific, we love the last book he ever published, Oh, the places you’ll go!, which we’ve given to clients over the years as a fun and (hopefully) thought-provoking gift. We’ve even written about it before, highlighting the powerful message it delivers about the perils of living in the waiting place.
But today, we have a gentler message in mind. Consider it our gift to you – a reminder that sometimes, we should keep things simple. If you have around six minutes to spare, we’d love you to watch or listen to this awesome video, in which Academy Award-winning actor J.K. Simmons reads Oh, the places you’ll go! in his iconic, yellow M&M voice (there’s a fun fact for you!). Close your eyes and absorb what we think is one of the most beautifully guided meditations that you can do.
If you don’t have time to listen, perhaps just read the below paragraphs that we’ve extracted from the book:
Oh, the places you’ll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. There are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball,
Will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You’ll be famous as famous can be,
With the whole wide world watching you win on TV.
Except when they don’t.
Because, sometimes, they won’t.
I’m afraid that sometimes you’ll play lonely games too.
Games you can’t win ‘cause you’ll play against you.
You’ll get mixed up, of course, as you already know.
You’ll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact,
And remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.
And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!

Seuss. (2011). Oh, the places you’ll go! HarperCollins Children’s Books.
It’s no wonder this book is such an enduring favourite with school and university graduates (another fun fact: its sales figures peak each year during graduation season in the US).
At its heart, it reminds us that we all have the potential to do incredible things. That life can be full of joy, but it won’t always be perfect. That there will be times when we feel lost, or are stuck waiting for something. That life is an adventure. That it can be complex and hard, but also beautiful and rewarding.
