We get so excited about summer and all the wonderful opportunities it offers – whether that means going to the beach, jetting off on holidays, spending time with family, celebrating Christmas or New Year’s Eve … For many of us, it’s a special period in our lives that we look forward to, and back upon, with strong emotions.
Yet we all have a finite number of years on the planet. Some of us have a magic number in our heads that we assume we’ll live until – most likely, it’s a long way down the track. You might think you’ve got 30 summers left to enjoy, but what if you knew you only had five? No-one wants to be that person who plans a post-retirement trip through Europe, or a caravanning adventure around Australia, only to be struck down by a heart attack as soon as they step away from the desk.
This is not an attempt to depress you. We promise! And we’re not falling back on tired mottos like ‘every day is precious’ or ‘live each day like it’s your last’. This is about living your life consciously. It’s about designing your time with purpose. It’s about doing the things that are important to you now – not next year or 10 years down the track.
Have a think about the number of summers you might have left. Now ask yourself:
- What am I going to do with my next summer that’ll make it special?
- What beliefs might be getting in my way of living the life I dream about?
- Am I happy with who I spend your time with?
- When I’m old and sitting on my veranda, what do I wish my younger self had done with this time?
Hopefully, this message is having the desired effect, and you’re suitably motivated to start making plans for the summers ahead. Book a trip, schedule time off, organise catch-ups with family and friends. In the years to come, you’ll be grateful that you did.
