How will you gain the slight edge?
Blog 325 book review

With the advance of technology, we have come to expect immediate results and instant gratification. However, The Slight Edge is here to burst your bubble, serving as a reminder that there is no magic button in life, and the results you desire most often stem from the cultivation of small, daily habits.

Jeff Olson is the founder and CEO of Neora and has built three different sales and distribution forces into multimillion dollar organisations from scratch. Jeff also is a best-selling author and motivational speaker, often sharing the philosophy he used to achieve success as an entrepreneur and CEO. Describing himself as "a perpetual student of personal development", Jeff has committed resources to the Success Foundation, founded Live Happy magazine, addressed the United Nations on the topic of global happiness and has been inducted into the Happiness Hall of Fame.

The Slight Edge is common sense brought to life. But what makes this book so captivating is Jeff’s ability to help us understand why so many of us don't follow through with our goals. He uses the analogy of compound interest to explain how small changes can produce big results over time. As Jeff simply puts, the small but compounding impact of every single small decision is “easy to do, just as easy not to do”.

He challenges us to think of every small daily decision as yielding a future positive result that will give you a slight edge - an edge that will move you ever so slightly toward your goal (or, alternatively, a slight negative result that moves you gradually away from your goal). At any given time, that small decision may seem so inconsequential that you could easily brush it off. But small decisions cultivate into habits, which in turn either lead to long-term success or long-term failure.

Jeff shows how this principle can be applied to all aspects of life including health, happiness, relationships, personal development, finances, and career. This isn’t a book that provides yet another method you must learn in order to travel the path to success. Rather, it shows you how to create powerful results from the simple daily activities of your life, by using tools that are already within you.

Here at The Coach Place, we often coach our clients to start small by creating and sustaining habits. Often, people chasing success want to take a massive leap, or have an all-or-nothing-mindset, in order to get to where they want to be as quick as possible. With The Slight Edge, you’ll gain some perspective on how even modest action, repeated regularly, can yield massive results.
