Have you ever found yourself wondering: How did I end up here?
If you answered yes, then trust us, you’re not alone. This is a topic that comes up a lot. People often come to us post-lightbulb moment, having realised they’re living an accidental life, or a life that someone else has mapped out for them.
Who knows what sets us on any particular trajectory? Maybe you chose to study law or commerce at university, because that’s what your parents did or wanted you to do. Perhaps your career was going in one direction until you got a tap on the shoulder at work, which set you on a new path altogether. Or perhaps your life has taken a certain course because you’ve compared yourself to other people and decided to replicate their version of success. Whatever the cause, all too often we find ourselves living a life that’s based on the beliefs and values of the people around us, rather than a life we would otherwise have chosen for ourselves.
If you feel like your life isn’t aligned with what you truly want and value, ask yourself the following questions:
- Are my beliefs really mine, or did they just come from my parents, family, friends, teachers, community or the media?
- Do I remember who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do when I was younger?
- Have I deliberately designed my career path, or is it something that’s just evolved over time?
- Am I trying to replicate someone else’s life instead of living my own? Do I have a car I can’t afford, or am I working to pay off a huge mortgage so my house is as big/nice/desirable as everyone else’s?
This is your opportunity to have a good, hard think about what makes you happy, what you value, who you want to be and how you want to spend your time. Be deliberate with your choices. Throw off the influences and demands of other people. It’s time to step up and be the CEO of your own life.
