1 thing that might change your life

Find 20 minutes in the next week to do this

We’re not going to lead with a bombshell heading like that and leave you hanging. So here we go: the most important thing you can do right now is figure out who you want to be.

As coaches, we like to break this down into two parts.

First, figure out who you want to be in three years’ time. Do you want to start your own business, move to another country, or have some amazing career that’s completely different to what you’re doing now? Figure out exactly what you want by immersing yourself deeply in the vision. Ask yourself:

  • What do I look like?
  • Where am I living?
  • What clothes am I wearing?
  • What sort of people am I working with?
  • How do I feel when I go to sleep at night?

Think about what needs to be done to create this future version of you. Do you need to study more, find a great mentor, save money, get a second job, take on work experience, become physically healthier or emotionally stronger? All of these things take work and time to put in place. Three years might feel like a lifetime away, but believe us, it will roll around quickly.

The second part of this is figuring out who you want to be when you’re 80, sitting on your veranda and thinking about the life you’ve lived.

At this point, what are you going to care about? Are you going to be happy that you lived a safe and ‘perfect’ life with no regrets? For some people, this is important. Or, do you want to feel like you lived an adventure – that you took risks, spent time with the people who mattered and gave life a red-hot go? We’re not saying either option is right or wrong, but we are saying that it pays to be deliberate about the life you are living and designing, so you can make your decisions accordingly.

This coaching exercise is about consciously choosing the next chapter of your life. The alternative is a lifetime of wandering towards an unknown destination. Figuring out your three-year and 80-year-old plans could be the most productive and enlightening 20 minutes you ever spend.

Start visualising and be prepared to do the work. By the time you’re 80, you’ll be grateful that you started today.
